I reminisce about Scott Hawbaker:
Working across the hall from Scott for many of my earliest teaching years at the end of the last century was a blessing having him as a reliable neighbor, mentor, and friend throughout the lion's share of my teaching career at Depew Middle School. He quietly led all of us through many, many changes in "technology" until his retirement. He was a skilled, brilliant, understanding, and patient colleague & teacher of Middle School students, Industrial Arts, Systems, Problem Analysis & Solutions Development with a strong emphasis on reducing, reusing, and recycling resources.
Scott never hesitated to gently & patiently share his knowledge, analytical thinking, practical skills, and sensibilities with me as a new teacher. He was the go-to expert for anything remotely technical from using a band saw safely, fixing a scanner to read & score exam cards, to understanding all the possibilities of using a computer lab with students.
Scott didn't just fix things for other people like me, but also taught them the process to fix it themselves for the next time - and there always was a next time - to be in a similar situation.
Scott's “well seasoned” coffee mug in the faculty room was always easily recognizable as belonging to only him!
During the first couple of years of my teaching at Depew Middle School, we were also neighbors when he & Diane lived on their fabulous homestead at the corner of Erie Street in Lancaster. His extensive knowledge and passion for all things trains & locomotives was legendary in this area as well as his ambition to buy a historic locomotive and restore it completely on his own!
I don't think there was anyone who knew Scott who was not delighted or surprised learning he was a
Ferroequinologist (A more academic or formal term, literally meaning "study of iron horses," for someone interested in rail transport systems). To use a modern comparison: he had the diverse and advanced thinking & tinkering power of a ‘Young Sheldon Cooper.’ Scott was able to see our technological future through understanding the past technological developments of centuries that came before.
The horn on his truck Depew Middle School students & teachers fondly remember at the end of a week:

I worked with Scott at Depew when he was our go-to tech guy. I still quote him whenever there is a computer issue. He always said “shut it down and restart”. So sorry to hear of his passing.

I saw Scott just a few short weeks ago when he stopped by my office at village hall to "catch up" for a few minutes. That visit and conversation lasted more than an hour and a half! I was so glad to see him as it been a few years since I visited with him at the Steinfeldt Avenue home. Scott and his younger brother Kevin both were on my Radio Shack staff for a number of years. Two vastly different personalities but both great people. And sadly, both past on during the same summer.
Looking back, I am so glad that the timing worked out that I was there when he stopped to see if I was in.
Thank you for being my friend.

Scott, we just had coffee the morning before. Wow we can't believe your gone. Thanks for bringing the gas pump (Transit Oil ) photos to share with us at the deli.
We've known each other from back in the custom Van days, you with your sixties chevy "Sno Van Gogh" and me with my 65 Ford.
We also shared an interest in railroading. and were the doers in that fine organization of dreamers.
You truly are a Renaissance Man.
To quote J Morrison "The future's uncertain but the end is always near"
Thanks for the friendship.

Just wanted to send my condolences. Mr Hawbaker was, by far, my most memorable teacher. I feel honored that I was a recipient of his golden caboose award and I still have on display lol (I graduated Depew in 2010). He was such an amazing teacher. I think of him often and he will be missed.

I am very sad to hear of his loss. He was the greatest tech teacher. I think about him every time I see a train because he always said, “They are NOT trains, they are LOCOMOTIVES.” I have quoted him to my own children. I’m so very sorry for your loss. He was an exceptional human being.
