Melania Wozniak

Obituary of Melania H. (nee Swierat) Wozniak

Melania Wozniak was known for her strength of character, kindness of heart, and most of all, love of family.

She was born Aug. 28, 1929, one of seven children, and the years of the Great Depression served as the backdrop for her childhood. She graduated from Depew High School in 1946. Under her yearbook picture was the quote: “Humility that low sweet root, from which all heavenly virtues shoot.” Interested in every phase of music, Melania will succeed in her ambition of becoming a music teacher.”

She did not become a music teacher but was passionate about music all her life. An excellent pianist, she had a particular affection for the music of composer Frederic Chopin. After high school, she spent seven years working in the accounting department at a local company and was proud of her independence.

She was a great dancer and met Edwin Wozniak at one of the dances held in St. John Kanty Church in Buffalo. They married in 1955. They had three children: Mary, Teresa and Marty. Melania’s skills as a homemaker were beyond compare. The cliché is that you could eat off her floors, but in this case it was true. Her cookies, in particular chocolate chips and Russian teacakes, were much sought after and her homemade pie crust was to die for. Her apple pies were the best.

Edwin and Melania were married for 57 years. Edwin passed in 2012. Melania was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary every day. She rejoiced at the birth of her grandson, her two granddaughters and in the last two years, the blessing of a great-granddaughter.

Her backyard often resembled something of a menagerie filled with birds, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits and other creatures that she fed every day and loved to watch. In the evenings, deer would come up to the back patio in search of apples and she always complied.

Her family and friends loved and looked up to her and will continue to do so while grieving that she is no longer with us. Much love to you Mom, Momma, Grammy, G.G. and Godspeed.
